indiewire.com: Dueling Snow Whites: Relativity’s Grimm vs. Universal’s Huntsman, The Casts So Far

Do we need two Snow White movies? Probably not. But the two in the works, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (Relativity) and Snow White and the Huntsman(Universal) both want to take home the bag of gold. The Grimm version, directed by Tarsem Singh, will be first out of the gate with its new March 16, 2012 release date (Huntsman is July 1, with director Rupert Sanders). While we’re certain one proper take on the classic fairy tale is enough, success will come to the film that becomes a must-see. Casualties of the competition so far include shortened production and post-production time and added pressure on commercial viability (as opposed to creative merit) of both films.
One hazard is the temptation to cater to Twilight fans as Red Riding Hood did.Look how that turned out. Joe Wright, for example, is holding off on The Little Mermaid until this fairy tale trend has subsided just a tad (check out the results of our fairy tale poll below). Huntsman, at least, boasts a kick-ass heroine.
Check out the casts so far of Grimm (above) and Huntsman, and synopses below.
Grimm Cast, Pictured: Lily Collins (Snow White), Julia Roberts (Evil Queen), Armie Hammer (Prince Andrew Alcott), Nathan Lane (Queen’s servant, Brighton) and the Seven Dwarfs:  Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, Martin Klebba and Joey Gnoffo. Also cast, but not pictured: Mare Winningham (Baker Margaret) and Michael Lerner (Baron).
Huntsman Cast: Kristen Stewart (Snow White), Charlize Theron (Evil Queen), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman), Sam Claflin (Prince Charmant).

Grimm [Relativity]: A spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale, an evil queen steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.
Huntsman [According to IMDb]: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron).

popwatch.ew.com: Relativity sets Snow White pic earlier than Universal's 'Snow White and the Huntsman.' Does timing matter?

First, let’s break this down: Originally, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, had set its release date for December 2012. Relativity’s untitled Snow White movie, starring Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer, scheduled its bow for June 29, 2012. Then, in an attempt to beat Relativity to the box office, Universal scheduled Huntsman for June 1, 2012And now, Relativity confirms that its pushed up its release date to March 16, 2012. Before long, this race to the theaters might just end with audiences catching a Snow White screening by the end of this week. (This part just makes me, LAUGH! BWAHAHAHA ~amanda!)
But will this race to the theaters actually affect which Snow White film will become the fairest of them all? We can look at box office history to fight both sides: Back in 1998, Deep Impact beat Armageddon to the meteor-fueled punch, but the latter film outgrossed Impact by over $60 million. (Impact should have raisedArmageddon‘s animal crackers a Circus Animal.) But, as we saw with preacher Harold Camping, we should never underestimate how much American people want to watch our world end. Two films boasting shock-and-awe special effects might find audiences willing to return for a second go-round; two films about a fairy tale character? Though we enjoyed our parents re-reading the tales as children, it’s less likely we would rush to the theater for another helping of Snow White.
After all, even looking at Hollywood’s mass destruction films, the Armageddon formula sometimes misses
a thing
: Though, in 1997, Volcano arguably had more star power (Tommy Lee Jones, Don Cheadle, Anne Heche) than the previously released Dante’s Peak (Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton), Volcano still grossed almost $20 million less than Peak. But, still, it all depends on the project. Should one of the Snow White parties create an excellent film with good word-of-mouth attached, we’re more likely to be willing to wait for a later release date. It’s about quality, not… when-ity.
Does a film’s timing affect whether or not you’d see it, PopWatchers?

And the BATTLE of the SNOW WHITES CONTINUE!!!

Relativity Moves Up Snow White Film to March to Beat Universal

(Who says they CAN beat SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN???! THEY CAN'T BEAT IT! HAHAHA!)

Not to be outdone by Universal, Relativity Media has moved up its untitled Brothers Grimm: Snow White movie to March 16, 2012. The switch-up comes only days after Universal boldly slotted its Show White film to open just before Relativity’s film.
Relativity’s Snow White will now debut in theaters on March 16, 2012, instead of June 29, 2012. March is a lucrative frame for family-friendly fare, such as Relativity’s Snow White, starring Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer.
Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman is set to open June 1, 2012. Universal had original planned to open the movie in December 2012, and caught Relativity off guard when throwing down the gauntlet and moving up the release date.
Not that the two films will necessarily appeal to the same exact audiences; Snow White and the Huntsman, staring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, is a darker retelling of the classic fairy tale.
And lobbing its own shot at Universal, Relativity announced it will open Safe Haven, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, on June 1, 2012—the same date as Snow White.
Relativity also dated Phillip Noyce’s Hunter Killer, which rolls out in theaters on Dec. 21, 2012.

thefablife.com: The Race To For The First Snow White Movie Is On!

There are going to be severed dwarf limbs littering the forest if the dueling Snow White movies get their way. Days after Universal scheduled Snow White and the Huntsman to open weeks before Relativity Media’s Brothers Grimm: Snow White hit theaters, Relativity has scooted their take on the fairy tale up to March 16, 2012. So this must be what it feels like to hold a poison apple in your evil sorceress hand. Metaphorically speaking.
Not that Snow White and the Huntsman should climb into the glass coffin just yet; the films aren’t even really vying for the same audience. While the Lily Collin’s Brothers Grimm: Snow White film is an action comedy co-starring Armie Hammer and a gang of warrior dwarves, Kristen Stewart’s Snow White and the Huntsman is a dark take on the classic tale. Which one will be better? Check in next week, when the competing studios will most likely release both of them in fairy tale film battle to the death.

[Interview] Sam Claflin dishes about SWATH and Kristen!

You have ‘Snow White and the Huntsmen,’ (opposite Kristen Stewart) how did that come about?
Well, I auditioned for it a while ago, but it just became sort of official like not yesterday, but the day before. I found out a while ago but the offer was there and I’m, you know, very excited about getting sort of my teeth stuck into something new as well.

When you audition for these big parts, are there kind of a group of guys that you know are also going to end up reading for it?
I’ve never bumped into another guy. But Max Irons is a guy I keep sort of seeing around and as much as I love him, I hate him because he usually beats me to it, but I know he’s an incredible actor and I’m honored to know that I’m even being considered next to him, you know, and it’s, I’m very lucky to sort of be in these rooms with these amazing actors, you know. I’m very, very blessed.

What about actresses that you’ve screen tested with?
I’ve screen tested with Amanda Seyfried during ‘Red Riding Hood.’ And Astrid, and I think, that’s it, really.

You didn’t with Kristen for ‘Snow White’?
No. No. I didn’t. Unfortunately not.

Wow.
No.

Have you met her?
No. I’m excited to because I’m a big fan of hers.

(I’m genuinely shocked. Can you tell?) That’s crazy that they cast and you guys haven’t even met each other.
It’s a bit crazy.

It says good things that they think highly enough of you to hire you without basically doing a chemistry test.
Yeah,I trust the director’s judgment. I mean, he seems like a genius to me,  so I think he knows what he’s doing. I hope he knows what he’s doing. But I’ve heard such amazing thing about Kristen. I have a feeling that there’s no way that we wouldn’t get on, you know, I’d like to think like that anyway. But she’s apparently rumored to be actually amazing. I have a few friends who know her personally and one friend who did ‘The Yellow Handkerchief’ with her, so not a bad word said, so.

I used to work with her dad.
Seriously?

Yeah, so I saw her a bit when she was little, around 12 or so, yeah. And she went from being a child actor and kid’s movies (like ‘Catch That Kid’) to where she is now.
She is THE movie star pretty much of the minute and she’s incredible as well. I mean, I just recently watched ‘The Runaways’ and also I love her in ‘Into The Wild’ as well as, you know, obviously, ‘The Twilight Saga’ but I’m very, very excited.

Are you going to be an English prince or an American prince? Do you know?
I have no idea, actually. I auditioned with an English accent.

Screenrant.com: Dual ‘Snow White’ Movies To Hit Theaters Next Summer

Universal has bumped up the release date for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ to June 2012, just four weeks before Tarsem Singh’s ‘Snow White’ movie is due to hit theaters.

The simultaneous development of nearly identical projects is nothing new in Hollywood; sometimes, one of said competing films ends up being scrapped (see: Baz Luhrmann’s Alexander the Great biopic) and other times studios just press ahead regardless of the competition, resulting in two similar movies being released in the same year (see: Deep Impact and Armageddon back in 1998).
It’s been known for a while now that 2012 would also mark the release of dual fairy tale flicks – Tarsem Singh’s tentatively-titled The Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Universal’sSnow White and the Huntsman. But now the competition between the two looks to be heating up.

Universal sent out a press release yesterday, announcing that its “epic action-adventure”Snow White and the Huntsman is now slated to hit theaters on June 1st, 2012. That move not only bumps Huntsman up more than six months ahead of its original December release date, it also means the film will hit theaters four weeks exactly before Brothers Grimm is set to arrive on the scene.

Progress on the Huntsman flick has heated up significantly over the past two weeks, withPirates of the Caribbean 4 star Sam Claflin and Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth having both signed on for the pivotal male roles in the fairy tale re-imagining – which will mark the feature-length directorial debut of Rupert Sanders.
Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron remain set to appear in the film as Snow White and the evil queen, respectively – with the twist this time around being that the Huntsman (Hemsworth) not only spares the famous princess’ life, he also trains (and, according to Claflin, possibly romances) her to do battle against her wicked stepmother.

Singh has also assembled a motley crew of stars to headline his Snow White adaptation, bringing on the likes of Lily Collins, The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer, and Julia Roberts to appear in the film, respectively, as the “fairest maiden in the land”, her Prince Charming, and her villainous stepmother. Principal photography on Brothers Grimm is scheduled to be getting underway this month; that could prove all the more advantageous to the project if Relativity Media eventually decides to aim for a Spring 2012 release date – and beat Huntsman to the (theatrical) punch.
Right now, however, Universal and Relativity Media are essentially playing a game of chicken with their Snow White movies. The latter studio will almost definitely be the one to “blink” first, since interest in Brothers Grimm will be significantly lessened by Huntsman‘s earlier arrival; whether Relativity Media will move its project forward to the spring or back to the second half of 2012 is really the issue right now.

While the casts for both these films are (arguably) equally strong, the directors assigned to each Snow White tale make one stand out over the other. Singh has already demonstrated a knack for creating gorgeously surreal (sometimes macabre) visuals and his previous directorial efforts (The Cell, The Fall) were neither financial or critical hits – though both are memorable films (we’ll see how his 300-inspired adventure flick Immortals turns out this fall). Sanders, in comparison, is more of a wild card, simply because he hasn’t actually directed a feature-length movie before now. Take all that as you will.
-
To reiterate: Snow White and the Huntsman is now scheduled for released on June 1st, 2012.
The Brothers Grimm: Snow White is currently still slated to hit theaters on June 29th, 2012.

Universal Moves 'Snow White and the Huntsman' Release Date to Beat Relativity's Snow White Movie

The Universal film will hit theaters in June 2012, less than a month before the competing project.

The race to bring a Snow White film to theaters has just ratcheted up.
Universal announced late Sunday that it is making a bold bid for Snow White supremacy, setting a June 1, 2012 release for its take on the classic fairly tale, Snow White and the Huntsman. The film will star Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles.
That date will likely not sit well with executives at Relativity Media, which previously nailed down the opening date for its tale, now untitled but formerly known as Brothers Grimm: Snow White, on June 29, 2012.
The move is clear throwing down of the gauntlet, as Universal originally planned to release its movie in December 2012.
Both companies had been developing competing versions of the classic fairy tale, vying for top actors as well as production start dates.
Relativity was first on the Snow scene, picking up a script by Melissa Wallack in June 2010 and soon scoring a coup by landing Julia Roberts to play the evil queen. The project, a four-quadrant family adventure being directed by Tarsem Singh, has been casting throughout the winter and spring – Lily Collins is playing the title character, and Armie Hammer plays the prince — and was scheduled to start shooting before Universal’s project.
Huntsman, a revisionist take, was set up several months later, in late September, but came with a director, Rupert Sanders, and Joe Roth, the producer who began the industry’s obsession with fairy tales and classic kids stories with his billion-dollar grossing Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland.
The Unviersal movie scored a coup when it landed Twilight star Stewart to play Snow White in December. But the project floundered in the winter when the studio had trouble finding its Huntsman.Viggo Mortensen was in and out, several other actors circled, and it was only last week that Thorstar Hemsworth signed on for the part. Charlize Theron is playing the queen, Pirates of the Caribbean co-star Sam Claflin is playing the prince.
Universal's Sunday announcement made no mention of the competing movie. The studio only said “adjustments to the production timeline” had facilitated the move.
“As Rupert and Joe were finalizing casting and preproduction of Snow White and the Huntsman, we realized that the ambitious and fully-formed world they had promised was blowing away all expectations,” said Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley jointly in the announcement.  “We’re thrilled that Universal will be bringing this singular version of a timeless story almost seven months earlier than anticipated.”

Sam Claflin: 'Lucky' To Be Kristen Stewart's Prince In 'Snow White'

Ever since it was announced that "Twilight" superstar Kristen Stewart had signed up to play yet another beloved character, Snow White, in "Snow White and the Huntsman," her rabid fans have been eagerly anticipating news of who would play her Prince Charming. The lucky man is British actor Sam Claflin, whom you will soon see in the upcoming blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

When MTV caught up with Claflin and his "Pirates" co-star Astrid Berges-Frisbey recently, we asked the young actor about working with Stewart.

"I'm very excited," he said. "I'm a big fan of her work. I'm truly sort of flabbergasted — that's a good word, I love that."

"She's lucky," Berges-Frisbey chimed in about Claflin.

"No, I'm very lucky," Claflin said with a smile. "Very, very lucky."

"They are really lucky [to have him]," Berges-Frisbey continued. "Because Sam is such a good actor and such a good partner. He's really generous."

"I'm just looking forward to getting my teeth into something new as well," Claflin said. "I've never had so much fun [as I did] doing ['Pirates'], working with Astrid and all the other actors. Being able to get my teeth into something new is something I'm really looking forward to."

Based on the legendary fairy tale, "Snow White and the Hunstman" follows the titular princess after the evil queen Ravenna calls for her death, centering on the huntsman who disobeys orders and allows the fair maiden to live. The updated story will break from convention by having the huntsman mentor and train Snow White to fight off Ravenna herself. The evil queen will be played by Charlize Theron, and the search is on for a new huntsman — the current rumored contender being "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth.
